The Fierce Love of the Mother

The twenty-third saying of the Living Christ:

Do not be a harsh judge, deeming every effort insufficient. When limits become condemnations, and the law is a sword of judgment, the power of God is lost. If a mother’s discipline turns to scorn, the vine is uprooted and left to wither in the noon-day sun.

If power blinds itself to its bounds of right relationship, it runs forward to its own destruction. Holy persistence does not trample the fence, but honors the soil. To break the boundary is to spill the life it was meant to hold. The one who pours out their cup of life without replenishing it weakens themselves by believing they are strong.

Do not lose the forming love of the Mother.

Imma, our heavenly Mother guides us, but never pushes us too far or for too long. She keeps her children from harm, calling them back to her loving arms. She does not tear them down, but preserves them to endure the journey of life.

Our Mother protects and guards us like a bird her nest. She builds her nest of straw and mud, so that the wind might not scatter her young. She does not strike the one who stumbles from exhaustion, but encourages them to a slower pace for the journey. Imma is present in the holy no, which corrects our steps as we walk the path. She teaches us to endure with wisdom, and persist in the right direction without closing the gate to the treasury of grace.

Imma is the voice that says stop, while continuing to believe in us.

When we learn to accept our mother’s correction, we are formed into the image of God, not rejected from the way of life. Strength is restored when we honor our limits, trusting that the ‘No’ of the Mother is a guide for us to protect life.

The soul is mended where the heat of effort meets the cool water of restraint. Only in this union of fire and water can we be made whole. The world is restored when communities honor the Sabbath of their labor, knowing the time to pause, the time to turn, and the time to stand fast. Enduring through it all, glowing like a steady lamp filled with oil, rather than a flame that vanishes in a brilliant flash.

The loving no is also a path forward.

effort rooted in grace

A crowd gathered on Mount Eremos, who believed in the return of the Living Christ. Five hundred faithful souls1 prayed together. The Risen Christ appeared to them.

This is the twenty-second saying of the Living Christ:

You have heard it said that God is the Lord who sits enthroned above all things, but I tell you, this is not the fullness of what Abba, my Father, is.

Consider the wind. You do not say, ‘The wind exists.’ You say, ‘The wind blows.’ Where it moves, there is life. When it stills, it is no more.

My Father is not a throne. Abba is what happens between the seed and the rain, between the father and the lost son the moment the son turns toward home. The love that goes out and the love that receives it are not two things. They are one motion, and that motion is God.

I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Not as the same stone, or as two stones in a stream, but as the water and the current, in the same river, each flowing with the current of the other.

You were made in this same river. This is the image of God within you. You did not come into this world to observe God from a distance, but to live God.

When you feed the hungry, you do not perform a service for God. You become the hand of God in that moment. This is what life is. Not a road that leads toward God at the end, but the flow itself, and you are meant to move within it.

I am the way. I am the motion. Follow me into the flow.

But there is an adversary, and his sole purpose is to stop the flow. The Accuser builds a wall and names it ‘Prudence.’ He dams the spring and calls it ‘Security.’ He fences the pasture and calls it ‘Law.’ Wherever love is withheld and forgiveness refused, there he has done his work. Sin is not a list of forbidden things.

Sin is the stopping of the flow.

Whoever has ears, let them hear.

Do not quench the Spirit, speaking words of love, yet demanding what is impossible from yourself or others. When endurance is demanded, while grace is promised but never fully given or received, life is hollowed out. This is not love, but a yoke of iron wrapped in silk.

Beware of weakening your will to persist, dissolving it into mere comfort in the name of loving kindness. Loving kindness is not an excuse to stop, but the strength to endure. Love sustains life.

When the roots of holy endurance are cut, the whole tree withers, and the fruit of life does not grow.

Let your persistence be clothed in mercy. When the oxen are weary, the righteous do not use the lash on them; but lead them to the shade. Let them rest and tend to the other needs of the field, returning to the plow once they have renewed their strength. If your endurance forgets love, only weakness grows.

Be like your Father, whose tenderness believes in us, not because we are hard workers, but because we are his children. He does not ask us to persist in order to earn a place in the kin-dom. He invites us to persist as the kin-dom, in the love and care we have for one another.

Our Father does not ask for striving or violence of spirit. He heals us at our roots, so that our labor no longer frightens us. Abba encourages us. Living in God moves like a river. Sometimes the flow is fast, at other times the river slows into calm waters. He is our companion, the flow between us and all things. In the rhythm of the tides, we find our rest. In the current we endure, in the sending and receiving.

Holy ambition is effort rooted in grace.

Hear the voice of Abba, “Keep going, you are loved.” His voice heals, and repairs endurance with love. The God who calls us forward is the same God who carries us when we fall.

The soul is mended when driven by grace and love. The world is restored because it finds its shape when we live in love rather than the fear that grinds us into dust.

Tenderness is the ground of all endurance.

Embodied Harmony

The twenty-first saying of the Living Christ:

Do not clean and polish the house of prayer and justice, decorating it until it is so beautiful that life cannot dwell within. If the building is beautiful, but the work done within contradicts it, it is divided against itself and cannot stand. It is the power of our relationships that makes the house beautiful. The way must be walked, not just swept and adorned to distract people from the deeds of their fellow travelers.

Do not give yourselves too much to do, my yoke is light and easy to bear. Pressure rises and falls, and the way guides you through. It does not burden you. The way does not press until you shatter. It gathers you to yourself, to one another, and to God. If the work of the way distracts you from walking the way, lay it down and walk on.

If harmony fails to incarnate, the way is far from it.

The way is beauty lived in daily life. The full heart walks through troubles and storms. It crosses the river, for it knows the stones that do not shift. It accepts the cracked stone and the uneven path, for it knows that in imperfection, there is room for the Spirit to move, encouraging growth and healing. The way does not fall apart when imperfections mark the path. Repentance and restoration exist to make amends for the way to continue.

Harmony accepts limitations. Not everyone can keep the same pace or push forward without needing to rest. It doesn’t need everything to be perfect, since only God is perfect. Compassion is the perfection of God. Harmony is tender to those who are grieving and laughs with the celebration. It sings and dances with others when the way is crowded, and takes courage from disagreements. It knows that this and that are the words of the Living God. It embodies coherence.

Harmony heals the gap between inner coherence and outward life. Harmony is repaired when it finds imperfection and remains present, anyway. It heals the soul by healing hypocrisy and fragmentation. Those who embody harmony heal and change the world.

True beauty lives wherever we are.

Relational Coherence

The twentieth saying of the Living Christ:

When you dance, do not let your limbs stumble over one another. Dance hand in hand, arm in arm, connected but never bound. Don’t all dance with the same steps, but share the rhythm that beats in your chest. The desire for harmony is strong, but if it does not embrace the differences of others, it warbles and the dance falls apart. Without a diversity of voices and steps, there is no music and no dance. Life thrives from the many gifts of others. When they are fused together, they no longer combine in a beautiful way.

Every building needs a strong foundation. If the foundation is ignored for the sake of the harmony, the building cannot stand. Each person remains whole in themself, but they avoid the open-hearted vulnerability that sustains the community. Now, the people cannot dance together, and they become isolated. Harmony should be shared, not merely admired.

If the dance falters or the stone crumbles, the life within them fails.

Seek relational coherence, which is harmony that builds trust. When the heart is centered, it becomes a stabilizing presence for others. People are knitted together through truth in the inward parts and a steady hand.

Compassion creates deep bonds without dissolving individuality. No one has to lose themselves to abide deeply in relationship. This is beauty that becomes belonging.

Harmony is healed as it grows the deep roots of belonging. The heart learns to form bonds that preserve distinction while creating trust.

When people learn to let go of wayward paths, the soul heals, and the heart beats in rhythm with the way. Communities grounded in coherence rather than control become a source of healing.

True unity preserves difference.

Reverent Harmony

The nineteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Do not lose yourself to the demands of harmony. True harmony makes no demands. This is a flow that embraces all and not a flood that erodes differences until none remain. If you are asked to vanish like smoke in the wind, step back from the flame. The flames warm, drawing us to join in a circle around them. We don’t bow to the fire; it serves the community. Do not live as a ghost, shading your own light with doubt. You are a member of the community. Speak up, speak out, and let your voice be heard.

Do not mistake your voice for the Voice or the Word. The work of the Spirit is not vanity. It is peace, justice, and compassion. This is the bedrock of harmony. Seeing the pattern isn’t the same as being able to live it out. Some behold the beauty of the weave and see themselves in it, which leads them to falsely believe that they have no more work to do.

Humility is lost in both these errors. The humble live in right relationship between themselves, God, the community, and the world. A tree that grows too tall steals the sunlight and the rain from its neighbors. When it grows too small it cannot serve the community of the forest. A beautiful and harmonious tree lives its life in relation to the trees around it.

Reverent Harmony embraces this humility. It beholds the beauty and knows it is unfinished, puts its head down and does the work. Those who enter the kin-dom join in the works of justice and love, bowing to the labor of Love, not to the praise of men. It remembers that God alone is served. Its compassion listens. Its balance is flexible.

The Fullness does not demand admiration. It grows, becoming contemplative without becoming passive. It is harmony that honors mystery.

Healing comes through deep respect for all life and its stewardship. The heart learns to kneel without collapsing and shine without arrogance.

The soul heals as harmony cures the pride and insecurity of the soul. It heals the world by cultivating communities that flourish when we all remain teachable.

True beauty is humble.

Resilient Coherence

The eighteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Do not become stubborn. I am the vine, and you are the branches, and the branches must grow. Growth requires change. If you become rigid, you become brittle and dry, and the green life is no longer in you. Stubbornness guards the ground it is planted in so that not even the living rain can reach it. The soil hardens so that the roots cannot draw in new life. Truth is life, and must be heard and listened to.

Do not strain yourselves, drawing more from the branch than the root can give. This throws off the balance, and harmony disintegrates when the pressure mounts. The heart cannot endure constant strain.

Stubbornness and strain flourish when coherence weakens.

Resilient coherence is harmony that does not collapse when challenged. It endures when the winds howl. Beauty is not fragile. Harmony is not brittle. Coherence is not rigid, but evergreen, growing into new life and growth.

Compassion heals the weary. It cares for the giver, the gift, and the recipient. It flows in both directions. The giver and the recipient flourish when they give to each other and receive from each other. They support one another so that the work may continue.

True balance does not wither under the heat of judgment. It tests all things and holds to that which is true. When the rebuke is true, the balance adapts and grows. If it is false, it runs off and is remembered no more.

As the world pulls you to and fro, stay awake with oil in your lamp so the light still shines. In this way, this wholeness can walk with you through the storms. It illuminates the tensions and shows the path to walk forward.

These tensions strengthen harmony. They teach the soul the flexibility of endurance. The heart is restored as it persists without hardening and adapts without falling apart. Strengthen your heart through the trials of the way so that you might heal your soul. Communities need people who can hold complexity without becoming brittle and exhausted. This heals the world.

Discover that true balance deepens under pressure.

Radiant Coherence

The eleven disciples traveled to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus told them to go. When they saw him, they bowed down, but some hesitated and were of two minds.

Jesus came to them, telling them God bestowed authority upon him in heaven and on earth, reminding them as they go their way, to make disciples where they are. They were not to be like the hypocrites who make converts, but to form people into citizens of the kin-dom who live the gospel in their lives. They were not to deprive any of the grace of God.

For all are made in God’s image, whether Jew or Gentile, male or female, or oppressed or free, and all are welcome in the kin-dom. They are welcomed through the baptism into the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit so they might share in Oneness of God, teaching them to practice all that Jesus commanded in the law of love and liberation. “I myself am with you all the days until the consummation of the age.”1

Then the Living Christ said the seventeenth saying:

When you reflect on beauty, see that the mirror is clean and clear. What you see can be distorted. If you are not careful, you will see your own face and not the face of God. If this happens, you will chase a phantom peace rather than to be of service to life. Beauty is admired. Suffering is ignored. The fruit rots while you admire the blossom.

Do not think that this is the only path. You could stretch a mask over the pain and declare peace too early. The wounds remain, but the work lacks the depth needed to reach the underground river of grace.

Do not let harmony become an image rather than truth.

The beauty of harmony is radiant coherence. So is the harmony of beauty. It is wholeness in unity with the Fullness. The world within sings in tune with the life around you. No cracks are masked by a holy face. Compassion and clarity move as one.

Your eyes open wide and you are awake. You can stand at the center without aggression or collapse. Harmony illuminates without effort. Beauty rests in itself.

Let wholeness serve life. This light brings the scattered spirit home. Harmony is made whole when it breaks the vessel of the self to water the dry earth. The soul is repaired. Its fragmentation is returned to a genuine coherence. The world is repaired because centered people who are not internally divided are the healing of the earth.

True beauty shines, not for itself but for the sake of all.

Truthful Harmony

The sixteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Harmony is not hard to see, but your sight is clouded, and so you are led astray.

When harmony overshadows the eyes of discernment, disputes are avoided at all costs. It does not matter how big or small the disputes are. You seek the shade of ease rather than what needs to be done. Have you forgotten that this and that are the word of the Living God?

Desire for balance stalls the work. The enemies of harmony are dressed up like an altar, with flowery words and soft coverings so the shape can no longer be discerned.

Harmony holds all things together. Here mercy and restraint sit and share their table. Neither should dominate; both should listen to the other. They must resolve their problems and not ignore them.

When discernment overshadows harmony, balance solidifies into rigid principles. Moral rigidity often masquerades as common cause, speaking the language of harmony to justify its harsh decisions and lack of compassion. The word is clouded. It unravels and scatters the truth among half-truths and lies.

The heart of true harmony does not collapse under pressure. It can say no without ceasing to love. It understands what harmony is and how truth weaves through it.

Speak the Living Word. Seeing the wholeness of the Living Body becomes courageous. When conflict arises, it does not remove the members of the community from the center. It is structured beauty rather than sentimental. Harmony does not fear pressure. It is the strength that keeps the arch standing.

Harmony in truth repairs the world as it discovers the relationships that make community beautiful. When kindness and courage learn to dance together, the soul is healed. Truthful harmony heals the world because communities cannot flourish when balance avoids truth or turns it into a sword.

Generous Harmony

The fifteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Be mindful of how loving kindness works harmony within the community. When compassion forgets harmony, the heart bends towards pleasing rather than healing, neglecting the aid, comfort, and support people need. Don’t ignore happiness, but the goal is joy in the hearts of all. Joy is a steady sense of well-being and meaning that arises from connection, purpose, and love, and cannot be taken by the moment.

People-pleasing fractures the bonds it pretends to preserve. It allows favoritism to arise and bows to the whims of a few and neglects the needs of the many. These fawning sycophants steal purpose from the work of the kin-dom to focus it on the desires of their beneficiaries.

Stay grounded and aware when accusations of people-pleasing arise. Hypocrites point to the kin-dom’s work with the vulnerable and marginalized to take the resources for themselves. The kin-dom always has an eye out for the needs of the vulnerable and marginalized.

Should harmony detach from loving kindness, then love is for nothing. Compassion is not a feeling, nor a performance to be seen. It is not something beautiful to be admired from afar. Loving kindness is the embodied power of God in the world for its restoration and healing.

Live in generous harmony with everyone. This is the way of the kin-dom. Love flows from our Father through us, not to divide, but to knit together in harmony. It does not react, nor does it seek repayment. It arises from the common needs of the people for life.

When the heart finds balance, loving kindness flows out generously without striving. This is beauty that blesses.

Generosity is restored when people are brought together. It heals the soul by mending the divide between our desire to help and our ability to extend a helping hand to others. It heals the world by transforming our communities through the power of transformed people acting in a balanced, generous way instead of papering over the problems without fixing them. All this restoration is discovering that true harmony overflows.

Embodied Protection

The fourteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Do not let your strength become a heavy boot, an arrogant law, or a dead letter. When humility is driven from the heart and mercy is bound, power is nothing but a hollow shout. Control has replaced care, and force takes the place of justice.

If strength stops caring for the body, it is useless. The mouth speaks of boundaries, while the feet trample the vineyard. You name the wound, but you do not treat it. Do not bury justice in the tomb of ‘one day,’ nor push it away into the clouds of the hereafter.

Strength exists to protect life. It shows up where harm occurs and intervenes. Strength is the shield that creates real safety through actions, not just words.

True strength is embodied protection, enforcing limits consistently and not in secret. It accepts risks and limitations and does not hide behind lofty dreams or cast its burden onto the weak. Embodied protection is justice that walks upon the dusty road. It is trusted because it stays when the storm breaks.

Embodiment repairs the rift between power and answering for the work. When strength consents to embodiment, consequence, and limitation, it heals the world, because the world is only repaired where justice is practiced, not merely proclaimed.

The soul is repaired when the inner relationship between conviction and action is healed. Embodied protection chooses presence over impressing or misleading others.

The only King worth following is the one whose feet are stained with the same mud as yours.

Foundational Strength

The thirteenth saying of the Living Christ:

Strength that demands loyalty over truth is already crumbling. Blind loyalty is the mark of a slave, not a friend. True friends are as iron sharpening iron; they do not seek a higher seat at the table nor ask for a weight they would not carry themselves. Friends do not favor attachment or control over the Law of Liberation or the Gospel. Loyalty abdicates power to others, and power binds; it does not support.

Power avoids relationships altogether. It is a winter without end; cold, distant, and locked behind iron gates. When it fears to be seen, it barricades itself behind unjust laws. Power and authority undermine the connections that create real strength.

The foundation of strength is a stone that does not shift, rooted in the loving hold of the earth. All may walk with confidence upon it. Its thresholds are well-marked, unwavering, and steadfast. They do not move with the wind or the whims of a master.

Real authority is trustworthy. Its discernment is not hidden, but communicated openly. True authority is born of the covenant, not the command. It stands as a watchman upon the wall, not a wolf at the gate. This is the deep soil where the vine takes root.

Foundational strength repairs power’s relationship to trust. This strength is found when we build a hearth where others may stay, rather than a cage where they are held.

When we break the chains of false masters, our souls breathe freely again. The world blooms when the grasping hands of the tyrant and the distant hunger of the greedy are cast out.

Foundational strength restores the world when it reveals that true authority builds sanctuaries and strongholds of peace, not cages and snares.

Humble Strength

The twelfth saying of the Living Christ:

Strength is not self-denial. You are the children of God created in the image of God. You should not reject the leading of God, but not every desire arises from God. Watch the movements within you. Does a desire cause you to shrink and narrow, or does it draw you into the grasping shadows of Babylon?

Yielding to the life of the Spirit is to yield to love, not to submit to power, vainglory, fear, and control of the world that has strayed. Submission to these cycles of harm erodes strength, even though it can build a life that feels like it protects the self from a dangerous world.

Whoever intends to preserve their self will ruin it. Whoever ruins their self for me and for the gospel will preserve it.1 Godliness is to keep a heart so open the straying world calls it broken. To live the gospel is to refuse the yokes of those who build thrones upon the necks of the poor.

Anyone who cherishes their life is in the process of ruining it, but anyone who rejects their life as defined by this straying world will guard it into eternal life.2 For what is the life everlasting? It is to know the One who is, and the One sent to heal the brokenness.3 God can only be known in deep relationships with ourselves and others. If you erase the self, you erase the mirror in which God’s face is seen. To deny your existence is not holiness; it is a silence that bears no fruit.

Neither these relationships, nor the yielding to God, can bow to the silence of domination; for where there is no freedom, there is no truth.

If you pretend to listen for the crowd to be seen but have no ears to hear, the Living Word is lost. Relationships wither and bear sour fruit. The rulers of this age wear the mask of a listener while its heart remains hardened. It mimics the lowliness of a servant while its hand still holds the lash. Strength that cannot yield is brittle, and will break.

Humble strength listens before it acts. It yields to correction and hears the voice of the critic without reaching for a shield. It holds the line, but it is not rigid. Strength honors the wisdom of others and the nature of the world, entering into dialogue to find truth. Learning to listen does not erode authority; it builds it. This is the power that trusts truth more than ego.

Restore your humble strength through a heart that receives but does not abandon its post. It yields to the Truth, not to the loud command. It drinks in wisdom without spilling the cup of its own calling.

Humble strength restores the soul by healing its relationship to humility. It heals the world because strength that cannot listen inevitably harms those it claims to protect. Learning to listen refines strength, it does not weaken it.

Steady Resolve

“After these things, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.”1

They spoke of many things, and as the stars turned and the others drifted into sleep, Nathanael, son of Tolmai, remained awake with the Living Christ.

This is the eleventh discourse of the Living Christ:

Nathanael said, “What did you mean when you asked us to take up your yoke?”

The Living Christ said, “I said, ‘Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’2

“That is to say, harness yourself to the work I do, because it leads to a gentleness and humility, which gives your soul and body rest. You can strive in this world alone, but together, we have enough to take care of everyone. Once you have a steady resolve to love God, love your neighbor, and love one another, you cannot help but take care of each other.

“My yoke is a strength that stands firm without striking out. It persists without becoming a fist. It clears the eyes so they may see clearly, rather than fixing them upon a single grievance.

“My yoke is patient, not forceful. It is a hand that heals, not a hand that harms. This demands less from you if we are all pulling the plow together than if any of us tried to pull it alone. Together we keep the line straight. Our strength is reliable because it does not have to react to the whims of a selfish and cruel master.

“Those who take up my yoke and follow me are like a sentinel who keeps watch through the long night. Together, some can sleep while others keep watch, because we all take our turn being vigilant. Sharing the work relieves the burden.”

Nathanael asked, “But Lord, if we are all keeping vigilance, how do we keep from hardening into an inflexible stubbornness? How do we keep from believing that the way something has always been done is the way something has to be done? How do we prevent the ‘always’ from becoming a prison?”

The Living Christ said, “This happens when resolve turns into self-importance. To do that, a person has to release my yoke. My way is to refuse to surrender the needs of the most vulnerable for any reason whatsoever. Love has no room for self-importance, which is why it is at the heart of the Law. Sustain your strength in love, because God is love.”

Nathanael asked, “What if our strength cannot endure, and our discernment is unsustainable?”

The Living Christ said, “If you push so hard you cannot sustain the work, your burden is not shared with the community. To love one another means we share our burdens and the work so no one has too much to do. Others lie to themselves, pretending that fatigue is a sign of mercy. It is not. As I told you before: when strength forgets its source, it loses its credibility.”

Nathanael asked, “How can I have this resolve you are talking about?”

The Living Christ said, “Balance your resolve with humility. Strength is restored when it remains firm without justifying its own actions. Together, we carry the weight of the work so no one has to carry it alone or for too long without rest.

“Serve truth rather than your own ego, and your soul will be healed. When justice endures and does not collapse under pressure or corrupt itself through power, the world is repaired. Justice cannot stand without love, nor can it breathe without mercy and the fair sharing of the harvest. True justice persists in faithfulness; it does not seek to bind the world in a grip of control. It abides in faithfulness, seeking not to rule, but to restore.”

Compassionate Discernment

The tenth saying of the Living Christ:

Fear not empathy, but guard against sentiment. If we are going to be strong, we must understand and share the feelings of others. Sentiment exaggerates or softens emotions and oversimplifies reality. Without empathy, we overlook how we can cause harm, even with the best intentions.

Strength without empathy is cruel. It masks harm with beautiful imagery and lofty goals and ambitions. It treats balance like a skin of paint on a crumbling wall. It speaks the language of harmony to enforce injustice.

Empathy is a bridge that connects people. Sentiment is a walled garden that shields people from empathy. It is like a young prince raised in a pleasure garden with walls so high he could not see the world around him. His captors painted murals on the wall to present the world as they wanted the prince to understand it. Everyone in the garden is told what to say, how to describe the world only in the way the captors want the prince to see it. The prince cannot have empathy with the world because he never sees or experiences it. The prince is trapped in sentiment because he can only connect with ideas, not people, but the prince doesn’t know this and believes he has empathy.

Both denying empathy and being trapped in sentiment breed cruelty, because the truth is compromised.

When strength is guided by empathy and clarity, the context, effect, and compassion limit what can and should be done. Empathy and clarity bring wisdom to judgement. Strength must listen before it decides. If authority cannot pause to understand the heart of a situation, it has no wisdom and will wander off into error.

Wise and compassionate strength does not surrender responsibility for its actions; it feels and acts with honesty and heart.

Compassionate strength heals the soul when it lets compassion and decisiveness sit at the same table. It heals the world by refusing to see a sibling as a shadow, a stranger as an enemy, or a neighbor as a tool. It does not abandon the vulnerable for there is no justice when anyone is left behind or left out. True balance does not avoid decisions, it harmonizes compassion, clarity, and judgement.

Just Restraint

The ninth saying of the Living Christ:

Do not let your judgement become rigid or your boundaries become walls. This is the gate sin entered to cast its shadow on the world. Severity justifies itself, and power forgets its relationships. In this way, law detaches from life, and sin is born. Discipline turns to punishment, forgetting how to restore all things into right relationship.

Compassion, mercy, and love must govern judgement, or it separates itself from others. This is how fear disguises itself as righteousness and control replaces care. Do not allow your strength to forget its purpose.

Strength does not hesitate to act when action is required, but it knows its limits. It restrains its own self-interest and serves life. Neither strength nor judgement is exercised with contempt. Cruelty has no place in either. Be as the deep water, which is not moved by the wind on the surface.

True discipline refines strength and judgement with restraint. It is not allowed to become excessive or brutal. It teaches just restraint, which heals the soul by breaking the hunger to rule.

He who must control all things is a slave to his own fear.

Just restraint restores the world because justice without mercy is a blunt blade. It tears where it should heal. True strength is precise. It cuts away the rot but spares the living wood.

Moral authority disappears when cruelty, contempt, and self-interest govern the heart.

Merciful Strength

The eighth saying of the Living Christ:

Take up my cross and follow me. Those who fear to lose their lives have lost them already. Fear cannot stand where love is strong. Fear is a thief that only enters through an unlatched door. If Love and Strength keep watch together, the thief finds no entry. True love casts out fear.

Remember also that love can bind strength. It can silence your words and stay your feet and open the way for fear to keep you from acting. When love cannot say no to harm, coercion, greed, or fear, strength withers on the vine and no fruit can grow. Do not let your kindness become a shroud that smothers your voice. Love that cannot say ‘No’ to the wolf is no shepherd to the sheep.

But if strength overwhelms love, cruelty and hate choke the vine at its roots. Mercy is not weakness. Mercy is the restraint strength learns from love. Discipline serves order, not life. Love teaches discipline to serve life.

Holy strength is tender, offering mercy and love. It stands its ground without coercion, violence, manipulation, or forced compliance. True strength is the force of the soul acting in peace, love, courage, truth, and justice. It serves life, dignity, and the restoration of all things.

Discipline arises from discipleship. It protects. It does not punish. It honors relationships and does not impose its own will. Discipline learns to act through love. Strength always seeks healing.

If you are going to have the strength to bring healing to yourself and to the world, you must discipline your actions through love. Restraint can be loving, but mercy does not rake the fruit of your deeds away like so many fallen leaves. You are strong when you remember why you practice restraint.

Heal your souls as your compassion tempers your judgment. Restore the world through mercy. True strength protects the vulnerable.

Embodied Love

On the evening a week after the Living Christ appeared to the disciples, he came to them again. Thomas, who is called the Twin, was with them; he had not seen him the last time.¹

After they talked, Thomas, who is called The Twin said, “The Name of our God is in you, and in your peace we should truly live, but how can others believe what their eyes have not seen and their hands not touched?”

The Living Christ spoke the seventh word:

By your love for one another, people will know that you are my disciples. Three laws fulfill the Law of Liberty, the Law of the Spirit.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart. Love him with all your soul and love him with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest law.

The second law of God is like it. “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” All that is written in the books of the law and the books of the prophets is about these two laws.2

The third law, I gave you. That law is, “Love each other.” As I have loved you, so you also love each other. This is how all people will know that you are my disciples.3

This is love that shows up and does the good for others, whether it wants to or not. Love is choosing the good of another, and then backing that choice with your life.

This is the way of God, because God is love.4 As God said to the prophet Hosea, “For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”5

“How shall I come before Adonai, and bow myself before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will Adonai be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Adonai require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”6

This love is not a show for the crowds, so you will be acclaimed for your charity. It is not done to be seen, to secure virtue, or to reassure the soul or the community.

This love is not deferred. Do not hide behind the goodness of your intent. A hollow promise is a cloud without rain. If actions are postponed, love is not enacted. Love does not wait for a better time. It lives where you are.

Love feeds, shelters, accompanies, protects, and restores. It is found in acting rather than speaking endlessly about what it might or could do. It understands and accepts what it can do right now and shares to the best of its ability. It gives what it can, living with its community.

Love is real. It can be touched, felt, and known. Your love for others shows that you are my disciples. That love is God, who invites everyone to the Holy Mountain for the banquet of life, a life more abundant.

Let love fill your heart, soul, and mind. Its presence heals and restores. When you love God, your neighbor, and one another, the presence of God overflows among you. It heals the divide between what you want to do and what you do. This heals the world as love takes care of, shelters, and restores all things into healthy relationship.

In this way, you reveal me to the world so others will believe and join the way. When they see God acting in the world, they will be healed.

Grounded Compassion

The sixth saying of the Living Christ:

Love is not binding. It does not distort our vision or hearing, because love can only exist in freedom. Do not entangle yourself. If love binds too tightly, it cannot breathe. Love respects differences and is lost when we force the many to become one.

Do not be afraid of connecting with others, for such fear leads to withholding compassion. Love is not only generous; it is deep. If avoiding entanglement keeps your connections shallow, they have no roots and cannot grow. Grow your roots deep. Let them touch the roots of others, communicating and sharing while not strangling one another. Our relationships open us up and expose us to the blessings and risks of the world. This is how we grow.

Love forms stable, life-giving relationships. They grow and mature in time. Loving relationships are consistent and tend not to break. Their intensity is not a measure of their value. They are valuable because they exist and can be relied upon. Do not judge a fire by the height of its flame, but by the warmth of its embers. A steady glow outlasts the flash of the lightning.

In love, generosity is no longer scattered, it is focused and personal. Relationships teach love how to move with dignity, consent, and mutuality.

Compassion is the rock upon which community, intimacy, and spirituality are built. Compassion is the Name and Heart of God, the Foundation of the world.

Love and compassion heal everything and everyone in the world. Healthy relationships are not consuming or evasive. They repair by connecting while honoring separateness. It heals the soul as it teaches non-attachment and intimacy. It heals the world as it builds enduring communities that are strong enough to hold diversity without control.

The heart of healing is discovering that connection is not ownership.

Closeness does not require erasing differences.
