Original sin simply means we're separated from God until we're ready to accept His rules.

Original Sin means a lot of different things to different people. Augustine, who created the doctrine from whole cloth and introduced it as a foreign concept into nascent Christianity, taught that it was a corruption of the human species and the whole earth that caused all bad things to happen, separating us from God, and requires the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to atone. This eventually leads to Calvin's doctrine of Total Depravity. It is a doctrine only found Catholicism and its protestant offshoots, but is absent from Judaism and Orthodoxy.

My biggest issue with Original Sin, other than its odd novelty, is how it has been used over the centuries to justify control, demand obedience, and excuse everything from slavery to colonization. It is also the root of much of Christian misogyny. It is an unnecessary addon to the faith that we would be better without.
